Annuelle robuste, grimpante. Pédicelle floral à 10 côtes sensiblement égales et rapprochées, d'où aspect presque cylindrique, devenant liégeux et souvent rétréci au point d'attache à maturité ; tiges 60-150 cm
Écologie : (répartition d'après la flore) originaire des régions tropicales d'Amérique du Sud. Le potiron est largement cultivé comme plante potagère pour son fruit comestible à maturité.
